Curious about the world’s largest arms exporters? The global weapons market is worth over $2 trillion and still expanding. In recent years, worldwide military spending rose by 9.3%, with China soaring by 7.6%. Here are the top ten largest arms exporters worldwide.
The United States is the world’s largest arms exporter, covering 38.6% of global exports. They’ve supplied arms to over 100 countries, with Saudi Arabia being the top buyer. Other big buyers include Kuwait, Qatar, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
Russia is the second largest arms exporter in the world, with 18.6% of the global share. Russian companies have two big clients: India and China. Sales to Egypt and Algeria are also significant.
France stands as the world’s third arms exporter with a share of 10.7%. The French particularly favor the Middle East market, with Kuwait and Qatar among their top buyers. The country also exports a considerable amount of its arms to India and Egypt.
Chinese arms, making up 4.6% of global exports, largely find their way to Pakistan, a country in a strategic relationship with India. Business with Nigeria also continues to thrive. China’s new clients include Bangladesh, Myanmar, Tanzania, and Djibouti.
Germany barely lost its fourth-place position to China, with its share of the global arms export market at 4.5%. They mainly sell submarines to Asia and Oceania. In 2022, Israel sealed a €3 billion (U.S. $3.4 billion) deal to acquire three advanced submarines from Germany.
Italy ranks sixth among arms exporters, holding a 3.1% share of the global market. Like Germany, Egypt is its top customer. In 2021, Italy saw increased sales to Qatar, Turkey, and Kuwait. It also had profitable deals with Turkmenistan.
The United Kingdom follows Italy in the rankings, with a 2.9% share. A significant portion of its arms sales are directed towards the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Some of these arms also find their way to India, its former colony.
In the eighth position of this ranking is South Korea. The main clients of South Korean companies are the Philippines. Following are India and Indonesia, then Norway and New Zealand. South Korea holds a 2.8% share.
At the ninth position in the arms exporters’ ranking, we have Spain. The country holds a 2.5% share of the global market. Spanish weapons primarily found their way to Australia, followed by Belgium and the United States.
Israel rounds out the top ten global arms exporters with a 2.4% share. Notably, it doesn’t sell to Arab countries. Instead, Israel’s primary customers are India and the United States.
